This paper presents detailed findings regarding the indicators of popular demand for democracy and mass perception of the supply of democracy for 18 African countries. It reveals that the status of democracy in 2005-2007 is quite mixed, with a handful of countries on the path to consolidating a viable democracy, several others that have achieved a low level of relative balance between satisfaction and support, and the remaining countries experiencing large gaps between popular support and perceived satisfaction.
