This paper evaluates three hypotheses to explain the role of ethnicity in voting behavior in South Africa. The first examines the politics of identity and persuasion strategies employed by losing politicians. The second emphasizes the alignment between ethnicity and policy preferences of group members. The third is concerned with voters perceptions of ethnicity based on statistical information. The author concludes that race is a salient feature but not the determining factor in voting behavior.
