This paper discusses African attitudes toward ethnic identification based on survey data from 1999 to 2001. The first section examines respondent's opinions in nine African countries with regard to ethnicity and myths. The second part discusses responses from Kenyans in relation to self-identification and ethnic identity. It concludes that as African societies modernize, voters increasingly define themselves along ethnic lines.
