This brief calls for a new approach to dealing with the military junta in Myanmar (Burma) that does not rely exclusively on Western sanctions or regional engagement by Myanmar's neighbors. It reviews the country's history and political context, and assesses some of the obstacles to its democratic transition. Moreover, the author argues that China and India - countries that both hold economic leverage over Myanmar - are unlikely to press the government to reform. Instead, the author advocates for the increased economic integration of Myanmar regionally to engender political reconciliation.
