This brief discusses India's foreign policy toward Myanmar (Burma). It reviews the history of India-Myanmar relations, examines India's long-term political and economic goals in Myanmar, and elucidates an alternative approach for Indian foreign policy toward Myanmar. The author argues that India's policy of "pragmatic engagement" has failed to yield benefits, and that it has consequently proven an obstacle to improved relations with the West.
