This paper revisits the Huang Chao Rebellion in China in 874-884, and considers the historical record and what avenues of opposition existed for the common people. The event is broadly accredited with bringing down the Tang dynasty. The central questions examined by the author are what factors of late Tang society caused the rebellion to happen and be successful, and, how was the rebellion later reconstructed by historians.
