This paper studies the relationship between air pollution levels and citizens' perceptions of them, and when they become politically salient. It focuses on developing countries and employs a pressure-state-response model to review public perceptions and identify inconsistencies. The author finds that a significant gap exists between public perceptions of air quality and citizen's expectations of government to reduce pollution levels.
