This paper surveys the US federal regulatory structure for scientific research. It outlines each agency's purview and considers the issues of basic research, clinical trials, human gene therapy, human biologics, animal biologics and environmental protection. It also presents an historical account of the evolution of the US federal regulatory structure for scientific research.
