This report explores the 'hidden' ways natural resources (NRs) contribute to urban livelihoods. It examines assumptions about what constitutes NRs and argues that, in urban contexts, there is a need to incorporate a broader view of NRs. It then suggests that there is scope for drawing on rural frameworks to better understand urban livelihoods. Moreover, develops a conceptual framework focusing on a typology of primary, secondary and tertiary uses of NRs and explores questions about NR-based activities drawing on examples from cultivation, forestry, water, waste, mining and urban spaces.
