This policy brief summarizes US interests in Afghanistan. The authors argue that despite the debate on what can realistically be achieved in Afghanistan, the plight of the country does matter. They explain that a successful US exit strategy depends on building a sustainable system of governance that can adequately ensure security for the Afghan people and prevent turning Afghanistan into a sanctuary for terrorists with global reach.
