This brief argues that ending the ongoing ethnic violence in Sri Lanka is the biggest military challenge facing the government. The author reports that as of February 2009, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have been cornered to small pockets of Mullaithivu district. Capturing remaining parts of Mullaithivu may not take much time, he argues, but neutralizing every LTTE cadre will be an arduous task. Further, the brief addresses the need to speed up a political settlement with Tamil minorities and pledges for a more active involvement of the international community.
