This paper reassesses Russia’s military, political, economic and diplomatic power after the 2008 war in South Ossetia. The author argues that the conflict has exposed some of Russia's weaknesses with regards to its military capabilities and its political position in the international context. The paper concludes with proposals for a new western strategy on Russia and the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood which would ensure an undivided and sustainable European order.
