This paper compares original survey data from Ghana, Zambia and South Africa to assess the attitudes of African citizens towards democracy. The authors show that although popular support for democracy exists in Africa, less satisfaction is attributed with the performance of elected governments. The paper also discusses how approval of democracy remains performance-driven and relies less on the government's capacity at delivering economic goods than on its ability to guarantee basic political rights.
