This report summarizes survey results from a representative sample of South Africans, conducted in 2000. The results show that South Africans exhibit modest support for democracy in comparison to its neighbors, low public opinion of political institutions, and a reduced interest in democratic politics. The authors conclude that these findings underscore the need to creatively think about reforming South Africa's representative institutions, in order to give people incentives to be involved in the political process.
