This report summarizes survey results conducted between 1999- 2000 in Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The report looks at four main topics: living conditions, economic evaluations, economic values and support for adjustment policies. The authors conclude that many factors determine whether market-based economies will take root in southern Africa. They assert that economic reform cannot be sustained without popular acceptance and that attitudes toward market values and policies have an important impact on the future prospects for regional economic recovery.
