This report uses a 1999 survey of public attitudes about Namibians’ preference for and support of democracy, their attitudes and opinions about state and government as well as their perceptions about economic and political performance. It highlights the progress that the country has made toward consolidating democracy in the years since its independence, but suggests that serious challenges remain. The author employs descriptive statistical techniques to provide an overview of the survey data and highlight important trends. The analysis focuses on ordinary citizens and their attitudes and does not account for elite behavior or institutional developments.
