This report examines how people experience and understand the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Southern Africa. The authors use epidemiological trends and national attitudes from surveys conducted between 1999 and 2000. They discuss the quality of available epidemiological data in the region and use the combination of date to describe the nature of the HIV/AIDS pandemic across the selected countries. The report concludes that HIV/AIDS has long-term societal and systemic consequences, including implications for public participation.
