This report combines public opinion survey data conducted from 1999 to 2000 with epidemiological data about the HIV/AIDS epidemic in seven southern African countries. The authors examine the degree to which people are aware of the pandemic and speak about it. They also use survey findings to examine the public health consequences of the disease. The report concludes with an examination of the degree to which HIV/AIDS affects southern Africans’ political priorities, political participation and expectations for government action.
