This report explores the role that poverty can play in undermining democracy. It uses data from public opinion surveys conducted in Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and South Africa from 1999-2000. The authors develop measures of poverty and well being to examine the consequences of day-to-day survival and political attitudes. The report includes cross-country analysis of social and economic indicators and concludes with a discussion of the political implications of poverty.
