This report focuses on the views of South African citizens for insight into the direction of democracy in their country. The authors use public opinion measures to assess democratic governance in South Africa from different angles. They assess people’s views of the authority and legitimacy of the democratic political system and look at popular assessments of the quality of governance. They use public opinion to offer insight into the capacity of South Africa’s democratic system. Finally, they ask whether government has the capacity to deliver services to its citizens effectively.
