This report provides insight into the prospects for the consolidation of democracy in countries surveyed in Africa. The authors test competing theories against the survey results of the first round of Afrobarometer research. They analyze the demand and supply for democracy in select African countries, while taking into account political, cultural, social and institutional differences. The report concludes with discussion of the combined effects of cognitive awareness, performance evaluations, regime comparisons and dominant regime types.
