This report investigates whether, and to what extent, political institutions help understand differences in the levels of satisfaction with the political regime in sub-Saharan African countries. The analysis uses survey data collected from the first round of Afrobarometer surveys conducted in 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The results show that those who support the government party show higher levels of satisfaction with the system than do those who do not. The author suggests that there is an interaction between the institutional context and a person’ status as a part of the political majority or minority.
