This paper examines attempts in Asia to develop 'late innovation strategies' in the electronics industry. The author argues that these strategies are a response to the challenges facing electronics firms as they seek to grow and remain profitable given rapidly changing technologies and markets. He uses evidence from interviews with 50 companies involved in electronic design in the US, Taiwan, Korea, China and Malaysia conducted in 2002-2003. The paper concludes that transformations in global markets, production and innovation systems provide new opportunities for Asian 'late innovation strategies' to proceed with the simultaneous development of engineering, development and research capabilities.
