This paper explores how Japanese electronics firms seek to transform their East Asian Production networks (EAPNs) to cope with the opportunities and challenges of East Asia's regional economy. The author describes the dependence of Japan's electronics industry on East Asia and how Japanese electronics firms are attempting to expand their regional production networks. He examines features of the Japanese network management model that constrain the capacity of firms to cope with East Asia's complex processes of regionalization. The paper concludes with an example of how Japanese electronics firms are developing alliances with regional industry leaders, primarily from China.
