This paper examines US' military presence in Australia, New Zealand and Japan as a binding alliance with merits and consequence that result from associating with a powerful nuclear ally. The author focuses on nuclear issues and policy consequences for the three countries, in terms of how relations with the US constrained their pursuit of non-nuclear and nuclear disarmament policies. He concludes that in depth research and comparative analysis of civil society and government approaches to nuclear disarmament are necessary to understand the impact of such alliances.
