This paper examines the contract manufacturing industry in China. It begins with a comprehensive overview of the political economy of industrial restructuring in low-cost locations in Asia and Eastern Europe. The author summarizes key trends in the development of global manufacturing networks in the electronics industry. He then provides an overview of contract manufacturing networks in the case of China. The paper concludes with an outline of the impact of contract manufacturing on the organization of work and a discussion of policy implications.
