This paper discusses predictions for international travel by Japanese citizens for the year 2025. The authors use a model that captures economic variables, population aging and cohort effects on Japanese overseas travel. They predict the number of future Japanese overseas trips for males and females, by age groups and in five-year increments. The results show that Japanese senior citizens will increasingly travel abroad, but population aging will decrease overseas travel, particularly among women aged 20-30 years. The paper concludes with industry and public sector responses to implications of a rapidly aging population on future international travel.
