This paper examines the relationship between Islam and economic development in Indonesia, during the New Order era (1967-1998). It discusses the ideas and attitudes expressed by the New Order government, Muslim institutions and individuals toward the relationships between Islam and economic development. The author explores how President Suharto attempted to accommodate the Muslim community to the ideology of economic development and documents the responses of Muslim organizations and leaders to these efforts.
