This working paper examines the implications of Asia's leading information technology (IT) exporting countries' attempts to develop their production strategy beyond imitation, toward technological innovation. The author contends that these attempts to enter the 'innovation arms race' may have significant implications for the region's position in the global economy. However, in order to take full advantage of the potential possibilities afforded by this approach, important changes are required in policy and management styles.
