In this working paper, the author explores the concept of 'global flagship networks' (GFN), which expand inter-firm linkages across national boundaries. This cross-border form of corporate networking practice necessitates the increasing use of digital information systems (DIS) in order to successfully manage these networks, with the new mobility of knowledge an unintended consequence of their evolution. The author examines the forces driving the shift in industrial organization structures from that of multi-national corporations to global flagship networks, and highlights the critical issue of the unequal distribution of the sources of knowledge creation.
