This paper examines the relationship between China and the US to understand how it has shaped economic, social and cultural changes in China since the 1980s. The author begins by exploring the concept of soft power in contrast to hard power. He then describes the ways in which American soft power has worked within China, citing examples of educational exchanges. The paper discusses practical ways in which China can be used as a 'training ground' for developing new soft power strategies. It also suggests examples for developing American soft power in other parts of the world.
