This paper assesses the importance of China's rise to Australian defense planning in the past decades. The author identifies a consensus in Australian defense policy vis-a-vis China; namely that Chinese military planning is primarily defensive and that China's economic growth will change regional strategic relativities. This consensus, the author argues, has served as a foundation for the building of a beneficial relationship with China since the 1970s.
