This brief traces the evolution of Sweden’s security policy over the last 25 years, which has progressed from overt neutrality to military and political non-alignment. The text’s author also wonders whether Stockholm’s non-alignment and solidarity policies, coupled with the focus of its armed forces on defending Swedish territory, could be combined to set the stage for a more in-depth debate about the country’s relationship with NATO.
