This article examines the history of Russian-Myanmar relations and Moscow’s perception of Myanmar’s ongoing democratization process. The text’s author concludes that the case of Myanmar-Russia relations is instructive as it highlights several of the key hurdles that Russia faces in its efforts to expand its ties in Asia. For instance, he argues that this case demonstrates how Russia finds it a challenge to convert its positive political declarations - and a comparative advantage over the West in areas like arms exports - into more substantial economic cooperation and greater geopolitical influence.
