This paper examines the development of eco-cities in China in response to unprecedented urbanization and sustainability challenges. Although the concept is new, it is being used increasingly as part of a broader, more fundamental planning approach that streamlines goals, focuses on existing problems and looks at small-scale eco-initiatives for answers. As such, the eco-cities approach is still under development and its efficacy remains in question, the author argues.
