This report provides information on the international debate over the role of the military in mine action programs. The report describes how military involvement in mine action efforts has long been subject to international controversy in both civilian and military circles, and explains how only stockpile destruction has traditionally been seen as a common military contribution to mine action programs. The report seeks to identify the potential for expanded military contributions to joint mine action efforts and analyzes the possible advantages and disadvantages of greater military involvement.
