This case study examines Albania's mine and explosive remnants of war (ERW) contamination problem, which was a result of the 1999 Kosovo conflict. While Albania managed to address its landmine problem, ammunition stored in former military depots, left over from Albania's former communist regime, still pose a serious threat to safety. The purpose of this case study is to examine the rationale for the shift from mine action to UXO hotspot clearance. It further addresses how Albania's mine action capacity supports UXO hotspot clearance; and provides lessons learnt from this transition.
