This brief highlights the ways we might use geographic information systems (GIS) to map out and eliminate unwanted landmine zones more effectively. Indeed, the technologies, tools and data provided by GIS will enable us to consider a wider variety of factors that create these zones in the first place, which then means we will be able to develop detailed and more effective demining strategies. These factors, by the way, include geography, population patterns, local infrastructure, and vegetation.
