This paper describes the use of dogs for landmine detection and how it has become an expanding industry. The author details how most of the operational mine detection dogs are German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois, but how increasingly also small Scandinavian Drevers scent hounds have become popular. The paper describes how the potential of the Drevers breed has been experimentally tested in training programs in South Africa. The author presents the results of the South African study and compares the capabilities of four Drevers with seven Belgian Malinois.
