This paper examines mechanical mine clearance systems. As humanitarian demining gathered pace, it was assumed that machines would inject a much needed increase in clearance rates with a higher safety level. The paper explains that this has occurred to a lesser extent than was expected. The authors argue that the belief still exists that machines have not been applied to their fullest potential in mine clearance. The paper discusses their usability in ground processing, ground preparation and area reduction. According to them, methodological risk assessment should as well be implemented to reduce skepticism.
