This article addresses a study published by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) in June 2004 on the role of machines in demining. The article explains some aspects of the operational tasks where machines are employed and concludes that after years of field experience, the severity of the mechanical demining’s initial problems is lessened. The author explains that machines reduce huge areas of suspect land so that manual deminers do not become mired in clearance tasks that prove unnecessary.
