This report discusses the use of Remote Explosive Scent Tracing (REST), a detection technology involving the transfer of odors to an animal detector using filters. The article explains the conditions under which REST is most effective as well as the advantages and challenges of this technology. The article emphasizes that REST requires considerable animal training expertise and significant investment in time and equipment. The authors conclude that a part of the optimization process of REST is to ensure that effective and regular quality assurance (QA) is undertaken during analysis.
