This paper introduces results of empirical studies on explosive chemical signature flux from field-recovered landmines found in Angola and Mozambique. The paper outlines characteristics of research methods and materials used, and reviews the empirical results. Nine types of landmines and one unexploded ordnance were tested using gas chromatography. The results show that traces of explosives can be detected in the soil around mines; yet, variation even within one type of mine is large.
