This article discusses the importance and implementation of landmine awareness programs (LAP) in countries affected by landmines. The article gives background before it addresses common institutional constraints in implementing LAPs, including misperceptions, communication versus education and operational constraints. Subsequently, the article outlines recommended practices of LAPs. The author argues that LAPs used to be neglected by mine action organizations and that mine awareness must become an integral part of mine action. However, LAPs have to concretely demonstrate their value.
