This paper explains that if countries are to be successful in reaching their mine action objectives, a drastic change in approach must be developed and tailored to different countries' specific needs. The authors state that mine and explosive remnants of war (ERW)-affected countries yet to undertake their first general survey need an accurate mine and ERW assessment in order to effectively manage clearance resources. The paper further explains that other countries which already have substantial polygons showing on their national contamination map must reduce the size of the suspected hazard areas while fulfilling their obligations under the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention and maintaining compliance with the International Mine Action Standards.
