This report evaluates the Ecuadorian proposal to have the international community compensate Ecuador for not exploiting the oil in the Ishpingo-Tiputini-Tambococha area of Yasuní National Park. It evaluates the proposal in a broader context and assesses the possible consequences of the arrangement for systems for international payment for biodiversity/rainforest conservation. The authors examine the previous efforts relating to the question of international payment for forest conservation, linking them to the international obligations of developed countries to support global environmental goals in developing countries. They also discuss the role of international organizations.
