This report explores similarities and differences in business strategies of major upstream oil and gas companies in Europe in the 1990s and beyond. It argues whether these mainly exploration and production-based companies chose to invest in specialization or diversification in energy activities in Europe in that period. It further reviews and compares data collected on strategies and investment activities of BP, ExxonMobil, Hydro, Fina, Shell and Statoil, and indicates what energy activities they invested in, how much they invested and where in Europe they made their investments.
