This report examines the Northern Sea Route’s commercial potential and economic importance, both as a transit route between Europe and Asia, and as an export route for oil, gas and other natural resources in the Russian Arctic. The paper assesses the commercial potential of the transit route, its economic importance and relevance for each Russian Arctic region. The report also provides a forecast for volume and types of cargoes that can be realistically expected in 2000-2015, in addition to identifying potential bottlenecks for growth.
