The Smart Peace programme looks at ways to improve sustainable peacebuilding in some of the world’s most fragile states. Focusing on Nigeria, Myanmar and the Central African Republic, the programme explores how those involved in conflict resolution can be more strategic in their use of new, adaptive and recognised approaches to ending violence and addressing the underlying causes of conflict.

Smart Peace is implemented by a consortium led by external pageConciliation Resources, in partnership with the external pageInternational Crisis Groupexternal pageThe Centre for Humanitarian Dialogueexternal pageThe Asia Foundationexternal pageBehavioural Insights Teamexternal pageChatham House and the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zurich.

Dialogue and mediation are effective tools for preventing and resolving conflict, and have been proven to deliver results. Yet there is a gap in understanding of how peacebuilding practice can respond effectively to intractable sticking points. There is a need for a more meticulous, granular and strategic approach to conflict resolution.

Through using the expertise of the various consortium partners, Smart Peace combines peacebuilding approaches with more precise conflict analysis, in ways that generate opportunities for experimentation and rigorous evaluation. The resulting insights will allow people involved in conflict resolution – including communities, international NGOs and governments – to adapt and improve their work with greater confidence. Smart Peace is funded by the UK Government’s Aid Connect.
