Datasets

Research activities at the CSS increasingly involve the collection of large datasets relating to contemporary issues in global politics and security. This section of the CSS website provides information on a series of datasets that are partly still under preparation, by both present and former staff members. For any queries relating to these data, please contact the individuals listed on the various sub-pages.

The “ETH/PRIO Civil Conflict CeaseFire” (CF) dataset aims to capture all reported ceasefires in civil conflict worldwide between 1989 and 2020. The CF dataset provides information on more than 2,200 ceasefires in 107 civil conflicts across 65 countries. This includes multilateral, bilateral, and unilateral agreements – ranging from informal verbal arrangements to detailed formal agreements. The CF dataset lists the actors to which each ceasefire pertains, as well as the type, purpose, coverage, and end date of the ceasefire in question. In doing so, the dataset provides an empirical basis to assess the conditions that give rise to ceasefires, how ceasefires affect the dynamics of conflict, as well as the role that ceasefires play on the path to peace.

The "Lynching in Latin America (LYLA)" dataset is the first cross-national lynching event dataset. The LYLA data captures 2818 reported lynching events across 18 Latin American countries from 2010 to 2019.

The “African Peace Processes” (APP) dataset covers peacemaking efforts in armed conflicts in Africa over the 1989–2019 period. Specifically, the dataset identifies peace negotiations in armed conflicts listed by the Uppsala Conflict Database Program (UCDP), and records information on each negotiation’s outcome, as well as on any third party involved as a mediator. Unlike previous data collections of this kind, the APP dataset includes observations on peace negotiations in both active and inactive conflicts, as well as in inter-state, intra-state, and non-state conflicts. As such, the APP dataset allow scholars to study the effect of mediation across a broader range of African conflict settings than has hitherto been possible.

The UN Peace Mission Mandates Dataset (UNPMM) includes key information on UN peacekeeping operations (PKO), special political missions (SPM), and good offices engagements (GOE) from 1948 to 2022. It is currently the most comprehensive dataset on UN peace mission mandates covering 1948-2022.

The dataset on UN peace missions is published external pagehere and the mobile app can be downloaded for external pageApple and external pageAndroid (for background on the dataset, watch this external pagevideo).
